I’ve never owned a spray gun for finishing. Also, all I have is a Senco/Accuset 2hp (came in a combo w/ a brad nailer) air compressor. And, I’ve read in many articles that you need a heavy-duty air compressor to spray on finishes.
Here’s my inquiry: Woodworker’s Supply catalog offers the following “Professional-Production gun sprays Latex without thinning – runs on a 1.5 HP compressor”. It’s a 1 quart can that requires 7cfm at 50psi. It has two modes: (1) pressure feeding mode – apply latex paints and other heavy-bodied materials (2) siphon mode – apply thin fast-drying materials such as lacquer and enamels. The price is only $89.95.
What is your opinion? As a beginner, is this a good route? I make anywhere from huge 6′ x 8′ built-in cabinets to small candle holders. Thus, I vary on my project type and size. My finish of choice is General Finishe’s Seal-a-cell and Arm-r-seal wipe on tung/poly mixture.
I just noticed that the mason jar & gun kit only reaquires 2-3 CFM to run at 90PSI. And, it can spray paints or finishes. It’s even cheaper at $50.00.
Comparably, what is the better choice for a beginner? The $90 or $50 one??
Any thoughts are appreciated.

Brian, I would consider and HVLP sprayer. A decent gun is going to cost some bucks theres no way around it. I bought a cheaper turbine powered gun by cambell hausfeld they call there "serious duty" model at the home despot. i consider that the very least you would consider. Mine does everything I need it to do. I would like to up grade to either a accuspray or fuji but dont have the bucks. If you want one that is powered by a compressor termed a conversion gun i would look up www. homesteadfinishing.com i think thats the address
*Thanks Ron for providing information on a first-time spray gun purchase! I talked with Jeff at http://www.HomeSteadFinishing.com in Ohio and have ordered a Walcom gravity-feedsystem that will work with my compressor.I look forward to my endeavors. Thanks again,Brian Christoff
*Im jealous ,i always wanted one of those fancy sprayers but just dont have the $$$ but please let me know what you think of it after you used it for a while im curious, i might find the bucks somewhere sometime :)
*Hi Brian,You are stating 2HP for your compressor but not the AIR CFM capability and at what PSI.It is advisable that compressors true capabilities are not on HP rating but on AIR moving cpabiliy, that is feet per minute and at what PSI. For instance, 7 cfm at 50 PSI is a rather large compressor, hardly 2 HP.Also a very small tank might not be adequate for spraying. Is that your case? Since the bundle you got is for running the packaged tools, perhaps the capability is just for that.Suggest that you find out your real compressor air handling power, hoping that it be adequate, and base your decissions from there.Good luck, mbl
*I use a 2 hp compressor (Cambell Hausfeld i think... I put it in the basement and never look at it since then)cfm. is 4.8 and my gun is a Devillbiss for automotive touch-ups cfm requirement is 3.8 . I sprayed pre-cat industrial lacquer with heavy solid contant on cabinet doors and the job is as good as your hability on this kind of equipment. it would not withstand commercial use but for do it yourserlf application i tink it is quite o.k....
