About to start my first plywood project using Hardwood Veneer plywood. I have no experience finishing this type of wood. Besides the obvious don’t sand through the veneer tip, can anyone offer suggestions ragarding how they’ve finish products made of plywood? Is the process different then finishing a solid wood piece? I would think the prepatory phase is very limited due to the veneer thickness? Are there any products that are better on plywood then solid wood? HELP!

Other than being careful to avoid sanding thru the veneer, the only other thing that I do any differently on veneered ply is to look and feel it over very carefully before I begin finishing. Most all modern veneered ply is super thin veneer. So, it's going to be to your advantage to find any problem areas before finishing, as your repair options will obviously be very limited after you've begun finishing. Run your hand over the surfaces you want to check. 9 times out of 10 you will find surface defects far quicker and far more thoroughly by sense of touch than you will with your eyes. I've always had near perfect vision. But, experience has taught me that a visual inspection is the least accurate way to spot minor defects that aren't glaringly obvious.
Other than those inter-related prep issues, I finish veneered ply exactly the same was that I do solid wood. I'm not aware of any finish products which perform better on veneered ply than on solid wood.

Kevin
Ditto what Kevin said.
The veneer on the plywood is still actually wood...just a very, very thin layer. Other than being careful not to sand thru the veneer, finish it like you would normally finish a actual piece of hardwood of the same species.
