I am refacing the wood around my gas fireplace and need to glue some boards that will be approx 9″ above the firebox. This spacing just meets the requirements of the fireplace mfg. What glue should I use to withstand the heat from the fireplace?

I vote for epoxy. Gorilla Glue Epoxy is rated for up to 180F. See attached page from Gorilla's website.
The MFR's specs are there to make sure you're safe and will never, ever, EVER have a liability claim against them. I would not be surprised if the 9" has a generous cushion already built into it. I would feel safe using any glue I normally would.
I would check what local codes say, rather than just the manufacturer. I think around here it's 12 inches rather than 9.
If anything bad were to happen it's the code that matters most.
