I’m interested in building a fireplane mantle and surround from wood. I have no idea where to start. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm planning on building a mantle as well. I've found the book by Mario Rodriguez to be a great resource.
Find it here http://www.taunton.com/finewoodworking/store/pages/070513.asp
Regard it as just as desirable to build a chicken house as to build a cathedral.

Many Thanks.
I ordered the book....
There is an article in issue #184 of Fine Woodworking on building mantels. If you've paid for the extras on this web site you can download that article.
look up a supplier in your area, take your tape measure and head on down. They will more then likely have the materials for you to get started also. They can be made with some very basic tools.
