I finally got my first LN plane. It’s a 5½ (I like the methods of David Charlesworth).
My other planes are Records (new models that got all the tuning and fettling I’ve read about incl. Hock blade and chipbreaker), Clifton shoulder plane, a wooden jointer with new blade/chipbreaker as well and some others.
I must admit that I am impressed 😀 After honning the blade this thing cuts like a dream. I planed some maghony and took full length (5 feet) shavings 0,05 mm. (2/1000 “) thick. With the Record/Hock plane I got some tear out due to shifting grain direction, but no problem for the LN it just smoothed the entire surface !! Besides its planning capabilities, the feel and look of the plane is very nice. I don’t buy planes because of beauty, but the LN truly is a beautiful plane. The machining and finish is excellent.
Planes like these don’t come cheap where I live (Europe) due to import taxes, VAT etc. etc. This plane set me back 475 $ It will not be my last LN plane though, but the next time I might as well got to the US (vacation) and shop for some planes and save my self some $$$ Now I really started my way down that slippery road of plane-addiction. The thought of all handplane workshop – no noise – no dust – seems very attractive 😀

Congratulations on the plane. I had the same reaction when I received my first one a couple of months back. I started with the Low Angle Jack and the #7 jointer. Shortly there after added the small block plane to the collection. I know what you mean by the "slippery slope". Sorry about the 45% up charge they are not cheap and to add that on top makes it tough! Enjoy.
Once you've traveled down the Lie Nielsen path, forever your destiny shall it control!!
(Sorry, just saw Star Wars with my kids!)
They are the best in their style and price range, and they are addicting. I have over 20 now from Lie Nielsen, and love every single one. I use them all the time, instead of reaching for a power tool, and enjoy the process that much more.
It would be cheaper to come here, buy what you want, and send them home. The vacation will pay for itself.
