I got into this woodworking thing big time about a year ago, as I was doing a lot a remodeling work and began to be very interested in making my own cabinets and furniture. I’m doing very well with my power tools and have a jointer and planer but realize that sometimes a non-power tool is the best for the job. To that end, I have bought a couple planes (a Stanley contractor plan and a small german shoulder plane) and a set of chisels as well as a dovetail saw and the Lee Valley sharpening system. I still have a big question: what should be the first plane I ought to have bought? What is the essential first plane? Second plane? Third? Enquiring minds want to know.

I’d rather be making cabinets and friends….

There's a thread going on the first couple planes to buy. It has a ton of good information you may find helpful.
