I am building cabinets with a front frame and flush fitting the doors. I usually use no mortise hinges. But my wife saw a picture with fitted doors that did not have the hinge barrel exposed. I assumed they used european hinges, but after checking the Lee Valley catalogue, it seems I am going to have to build up the sides to mount the cabinet side of the hinge. Does anybody have any other ideas so I do not have to build up the inside of the cabinet?

Most of the euro hinge manufacturers make an inset hinge with a face frame mounting clip. I used Blum's on my last inset job. I used the special face frame adapter BH175H5030.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
It's possible that another type of hinge was used apart from the 'Euro' hinges known and sold as barrel hinges. A brand name of this type of hinge is Soss. You'll find reference to them and descriptions of their installation by doing a search on the internet.
If you are US based one supplier that sells them I believe is Rockler where you should be able to get an idea of their installation at their website.
Barrel hinges are quite inconspicuous in use, but can be very unforgiving when installed. Everything must be just right or misalignment shows and once there it's hard to fix. Most people think only of the small type of 'Soss' barrel hinge. In fact there is a range some of which are heavy duty, will swing an architectural fire door and are fitted in mortices rather than comparitively simple bored holes. Slainte.

Barrell, soss, knife hinges are a few that do not show the pin. Barrell hinges require just a hole. Knife hinges mortise into the top and bottom, not sure if any of this hinge is exposed.
