Hi all,
I’m a woodworker from across the atlantic and i’m trying to build a lamp which I designed. Now the frame didn’t give me any problems built with oak an mortised joints it looks good, even if I say so myself.
Now I’ve come to the point that I want to bend 1mm veneer as the lampshade but i havn’t found a product that can fixate the veneer in a predifined form.
I’m not layering the veneer because I want the veins of the wood to glow in the light so I need a transparent glue that doesn’t thicken the veneer but just fixates it.
Anybody any Ideas?
Thank you for any help.

Hi,
Well I haven't tried anything like this but what comes to mind is to try one of two options. One is to steam bend the veneer to your shape or perhaps a bit beyond your shape to account for springback. Guitar makers have been doing this for years with a piece of stainless steel and a light bulb. Let it dry sufficiently before removing it from your clamping fixture. The only issue is what happens when you turn on the light. Will it heat up enough to change shape? And will the changing shape be a bad thing?
If this doesn't give you the results you want, then I'd try some clear resin like a boat epoxy or even a fiberglass resin. Good luck. Gary
Gary,Thanks for the info. Besides steambending I'd like to fixate the veneer from within the wood. I'll give this a go and see how the shades hold up with moisture. If there's any interest in a pic then i'd like to know how to post it.Thats it, you'll be hearing from me when my next dilemma arises.P.
I have a lamp that has a veneer lampshade. The structure of the lampshade is actually a thin, translucent white plastic (looks like polystyrene); the veneer is glued onto this backing.

A lampshade with polystereen or any other kind of plastic?
No not for me. Should have mentioned that I make 100% recycable furniture. So no plastic for me.
Thanks for the tip but I'll give the steambending Gary mentioned a go.
Thinking of it. Maybe submerging the veneer in a hide glue dilution after steambending is an option.
The lamp is a energy saver so not much heat generated there. Distance from veneer to lamp averages from 15" to 30".
Yes not a lamp for small spaces.Be hearing from you.P.
