I have been doing some woodworking for a few years and am now moving more to hand tools. Of couse I’d love to get a full set of new Lie Neilson planes and saws, but I have more time than money ( and not much time). So instead I have been looking to fix up some old planes. There are several articles out there about tuning the frog, flattening soles, etc. The question for me is on a rusty old ebay tool, what is the best way to remove some of the moderately heavy rust? With enough time I think this could be a decent user tool. Naval jelly? mineral spirits? sandpaper? green scubber pads? steel wool? The sole is easy enough to sand flat, but is there an easy safe way to get the inside cleaned up?

Planes
All of the above works - also try emery paper 220 grit. Wire brush by hand or with a wire wheel on a 4 in. grinder.

I wrote a blog on fixing up a No 7
I wrote a blog about fixing up an old Stanley No 7 jointer plane. You can read it here

Great article MV.
What do you think about navel jelly. Is it similar to Evapo Rust - or much different -
Thanks,
SA
Thanks
I hate naval jelly. I used it once and it stained the metal.
I actually use Citric Acid now instead of Evapo Rust. Works as well but is much cheaper. I bought 15lbs of Citric Acid on Ebay for $40. Will last me years
White Vinegar
Try white vinegar (from a grocery store). You might like the results. With citric acid (se a post below) you can mix a higher concentration - that would work faster.

Plane Restoration
Hi,
I have restored over 300 planes. Sandblasting works quite well on the inner surfaces, if you have access to a blaster. If not, electrolysis is a gentler way and will do the entire plane in one event. You will still have to do some scrubbing, but it will take much less effort. Some of the rust will actually be converted back to iron in the process. I can forward you info on how it is done. A fine wire wheel at 3450 RPM also is effective and will work to polish some surfaces.
Sanding a sole flat will not really get it flat. By flat I mean where you can take shavings down around one to two thousandths of an inch thin. I have a service that will restore any plane to DEAD flat. If interested, email me at [email protected] for more information. I also can remachine all critical surfaces on the frog. With the sole dead flat and frog restored you will get the performance that rivals any top of the line plane. Check out Chris Schwarz's blog for a review of my work around Dec. 1 2009 "Vintage Planes That Are Better Than New".

Removing rust from planes
I don't have the links but look up this link http://www.rowand.net/Shop/Tools/Electrolysis.htm
I did this with a rusted fire pit, not hand tools and was amazed how well it worked. You'll need one table spoon of baking soda per gallon of water and a 12 volt battery and a steel Sacrificial piece that the rust will more too.
This works great
Battery Charger
Some folks used battery chargers nd reported good results.

fixing up old dogs
I "fixed up" my old dog by using Grecian Formula on the graying facial hair prior to taking him to the dog park to meet the ladies. ;-)
An Improvement?
Ralph,
Given that the dogs are color blind - how much do you think you improved your dog's chances? <g>
Best wishes (to your dog too),

the dog's chances
I did this because the dog asked me to. He had been watching those ads on TV featuring sports figures with gray beards and such, and became motivated. Now, he's pushing for a Dogiagra prescription. ;-)

A lot of TV fare probably increases the need for -agra intervention. As with prescriptions - I hope that you have a low co-pay.

The electrolysis works pretty well, but be careful and use a well ventilated place ie outside or use a hood. I made mine in a plastic tote with rebar wired to a battery charger and using washing soda for a reagent. This process works but gives of hydrogen gas a by product so take the proper precautions.
