There are a couple of 10″ diameter pine posts holding up my front porch. they are weathered and grey on the sides that are exposed to the sun, because the previous owner got a bum steer and coated them with indoor urethane. I want to “bring them back” and treat with spar varnish. What’s the best way? Should I just use an orbital sander until the grey goes away? If so, can someone suggest starting and finishing grits?

To remove staining caused by water, use oxalic acid. It's availabe in most paint stores and some home centers.
Let me say that polyurethane is not a good choice for exterior applications unless you get one from a marine coating manufacturer. These are available at marina or marine supply stores. Polyurethane rapidly deteriorates when exposed to UV. The consumer brands available at home centers do not last very well.
What other finish would you recommend? Anything better than spar varnish? Would like something as clear as feasbile.
