Hey Gang,
Does anyone know of a place to buy smallish (9 X 12 or 10 X 13) pieces of glass in 3/8ths or 1/2 inch thickness?
My local guys only carry 1/8th or 3/16ths, and would have to special order thicker glass in whole sheets (read – expensive)
The glass will be used for sharpening – I know the thinner glass will work and is flat enough, etc., but I am looking for thicker glass due to the fact that these will be picked up and stored, then pulled back out on a regular basis. I have a feeling the thinner glass will be broken before I get much use out of it.
Thanks,
Lee

I got mine at the local glass shops. They don't always have them, except for special orders. I just kept checking. Usually found what I needed. What about adhering the thinner pieces to MDF, as was suggested previously, as a base support? Perhaps 2 pieces of 3/4 MDF glued together as a base?
If your faced with having to order something in then why not get a small granite surface plate? $18.95 for 9' x 12" x 2" and flat to .0001". Admittedly overkill but you get some bragging rites if that's any value to you.;)

Option "B" is to get a nice big stone floor tile at a local tile store or from a Borg store if they've wiped out the little guys.
If there's a Pier 1 near you, they have 20x20 1/2" table tops for $35. Also, search glass table tops for an online dealer, there's plenty. Shipping charges are a killer though. When I wanted one, I just checked local used furniture stores for old table tops and I found a couple at reasonable prices, though much bigger than what you're looking for.
Good point about looking at table tops at Pier 1. I was at the local Room & Board outlet store a while back, and noticed they had a bunch of odd size glass table tops in the back they were selling at clearance prices.
Someone else mentioned using a cheap granite surface plate - one other source for those is http://www.use-enco.com/.

Often available in the dumpster at your local countertop shop.
Lee, I have enough 3/8 glass to make a F150 squat. All I have to do is get it cut. I have been intending to cut some for myself for the same purpose.
I have a new eaddress and will email you so we can talk about how I can help.
Cool
I got a glass lapping plate from Lee Valley, it is 1/4" thick but it still is in one piece.

Life is what happens to you when you're making other plans .
Craft stores like Michaels also sell thick glass table tops.
check out second hand furniture stores I salvaged a nice piece of 1/2 thick glass from a the legs of a coffee table. Anyway keep looking you should be able to pick something up for not to much money. You might also look for 12x12 or 12x18 granite tiles they are usually pretty flat.

Hi mapleman:
As a frugal woodworker I have to mention my source of glass for "scary sharp" (sandpaper sharpening). I go to local glass shops and ask for any cut off pieces of plate glass. They usually have several, and since they are waste to them, I have never been charged.
Good luck and be safe
Dennis
