Can you make a floating shelf or shelves using boards no more than an inch thick? If so, how would you do it? Thanks so much. Paul

Depends on the overall size of the shelf and what weight you expect it to carry. By floating I assume you mean fixed along the back edge only.
I have done it by drilling 1/2" holes centrally in from the back edge for 3/4 of the shelf width, you may need to use a drill press or jig to stop the bit wandering.
Drill matching holes at least 4" into the wall and then bond 3/8" metal rod or studding in with epoxy resin, the difference in hole sizes allows some play, the shelf will need proping while the epoxy sets. This works well in masonary walls, if you are fixing to studs the holes will need spacing to suit.
