Flooring Shaper Cutters ? Grizzly ?
Has anyone used the 1 1/4″ bore 5-winged carbide tipped shaper cutters from Grizzly (2002 catalog pg 368 & 369). I am planning to purchase the T&G set C3699Z for flooring.
I only have 1 1/4″ spindle at the moment for my shaper. If you know of another source for a quality flooring cutter I will appreciate that info.
Finally, some T&G cutter profile have 1/32″ relief between the bottom faces of the wood. I can see the advantage that it would give you a tight joint on top without any interference from the bottom faces. However, if you have a crown in subfloor at the joint of two flooring pieces I would think that the top seem would open up due to the bottom relief allowing the center of the two flooring pieces to rise. I only intend to make wide plank flooring (~6″) so this might be an issue. Any feedback?
Thanks,
Imran

I am not familiar with the Grizzly knifes but I’ve been a hardwood flooring contractor for about 20 years; Trust me you need to mill it with a flooring profile. I’ve tried to install wood milled with a T&G knife its almost next to imposable. Most floor men glue and nail wide plank flooring, so you need the gap at the bottom for glue. Also theirs is a slight angle on top and a lose fitting T&G. I would get a knife that is made to NOFMA (NATIONAL OAK FLOORING MANUFACTURING ASSOCIATION) standards.

Jeff,
Thanks for the experienced input. Grizzly sells a 3 winged flooring specific cutter with a 3/4" bore. It has the relief on bottom and a rounded T&G. I do not see the angle on the top. With the angle on the top do you mean a very small chamfer which would give a very small "V" in the joint ?
Where can one buy NOFMA cutters ?
Thanks,
Imran
Hi Imran
>The angle is very slight; it’s on top of the tung. Not sure about NOFMA I never made my own flooring. I don’t thank its that important. looks like the Grizzly’s are for flooring and are ok. I can’t see good enough at there web site. If you want to see what I’m talking about go to Home Depot they have ¾”x 2 ¼” red oak.
