Hello: While browseing tools (didn’t buy a thing, honest!) I came across “fly cutters” which looked kinda like forstner bits but not really. What are these used for?

There's fly cutters for milling macines and a version for woodworking to cut large holes and circles. Do a google search for more and you should find info in most of the catalogs out there. Always operate them at the lowest possible speed and a drill press is mandatory.
I have one, similar to an expansion bit. Used only in a drill press. Cuts circles up to about 6" in diameter. Unlike a large wood bit, and similar to a hole saw, the inside of the circle comes out as one piece. If you ever aquire one, paint the end that holds the cutter. When spinning the painted end lets you know to stay the heck away from it. You can't see the cutter very well when it is spinning. Use at the lowest speed on a drill press.High speeds dull the cutter and ruin the work. I use about 300 rpm's.
Toy makers use these alot to cut the wheels for their projects, if they do not use a lathe.

Thanks, guys I know what your talking about, I have one but didn't know what it was callled. The thing I saw was maybe misslabeled as a flycutter, it was not the gizmo where the arm with a cutter goes out to the desired size. I'll try and find the picture and post it. DukeKenneth Duke Masters
