Hi Folks,
I’m looking to make a box to hold the champagne flutes from my wedding. My thinking is there must be some kind of foam that will conform the shape of the glasses. I would be nervous about putting a lot of pressure on the fragile stems.
Any thoughts

Is this a display box (open front), or a storage/"presentation" box (closed lid)?
If the latter, I'd start with a divider that would partly surround the top of the glasses, plus another smaller one that would keep the stems in place. Some thin foam, covered in velvet or some other fabric can give the interior a "plush" look.
If it's totally utilitarian storage, as opposed to fancy, there are expanding foam products used for shipping delicate instruments and equipment that might be worth looking into. You squirt the stuff in the box, overlay it with a plastic sheet, and then place the equipment in the container while the foam is still expanding. It's typically done in two halves, like making a casting mold.
I do not recommend letting the foam expand with the glasses in place. That stuff can exert significant pressure, even with on open top to the mould.
I would suggest making blanks and letting the foam mould itself around the blanks, then trim the excess.
Another possibility will be to use expanded polystyrene pellets mixed with a little glue to make the padding or carve up a piece of expanded polystyrene.
Use minimal contact at all points. I'd measure the diameter at the bowl portion and the foot. Drill or cut your foam block to those sizes. Then slice those blocks in half. You will also need a small block of foam to prevent longitudinal movement. Don't worry about all the points in between the small foam blocks. A bit of movement is probably safer than getting the fit too tight.
Hi buckandthegirls, A good place to try would be your local camera shop, (one that sells cameras & lenses), you should be able to buy foam inserts for camera cases. I have only seen it gray, but it is pre cut into quarter inch cubes, that can be removed to fit your size needs, hope this helps. garyowen
foam inserts for glasses
I knew someone would come up with a simple, quick and obvious solution. The embarasing part is that I have been an avid photographer for 30 years...why didn't I think of that????
thank you
