I am trying to find a marking knife I can keep in my shop apron and not worry about gutting myself like a fish when I bend over.
It seems like the ideal knife would be a folding type (like a pocket knife) with two blades. One blade would have a left-hand bevel and the other would have a right-hand bevel.
A regular old pocket knife doesn’t do the job because the blade is beveled on both sides and can’t be relied upon to accurately track a straight-edge as well as a knife with a single bevel.
If anyone knows where to find such a marking knife, I’d appreciate your guidance.
Thanks,
Paul

Sorry, I haven't seen such a thing, but I will offer some unsolicited advice. (Dunc is my name and unsolicited advice is my game.) If I wanted to keep one in my apron, I'd get one of the fixed blade, bisexual - I mean ambidextrous - ones and make a leather sheath for it. I'd fit the sheath tight enough to keep the knife from jumping out but loose enough that it would be easy to draw.
Seems you may be able to find a two bladed pocket knife, and regrind the edges of the two blades, one right bevel, one left bevel.

Hi All,
Don't know where I saw it, but one of the 'big' names uses a swiss army knife - Ian Kirby, maybe?????

Eddie,
Here's at least one place: his Accurate Table Saw book. I haven't yet checked his Complete Dovetail. He advocates the use of a curved blade, which won't be so much dictated by the grain. I actually had a small swiss army knife and reground the blade in order to try it. I liked it, but stupidly reground the indent ground into the upper blade for the thumbnail. Ever tried to unfold an army knife without that thumbnail indent? I just went back to my Japanese single bevels. A light touch and they don't track away with the grain. But I don't keep them in my apron, either.
Cheers,
Greg
Paul Sellers advocates using a Stanley 10-049 folding Pocket Knife.
Check out Lee Valley Tools, they sell several excellent marking knives
I had a homemade marking knife for years... I moved my shop recently and haven't found it yet. In the meantime, I use my folding utility knife. It;'s one of those brass and wood fancy schmancy ones you can get from Walmart for like 12 bucks. I've been using it on jobsites for years upon years and never thought twice about it.
