I am looking for some plans for a type of folding stepstool/bench. The idea is that a simple bench for sitting converts to a stepstool by rotating a hinged section 180 degrees. The underside of that part of the bench seat now becomes the top step. The leg portion of that part now becomes the highest handhold. I have seen various designs of this and can make it up myself. However, I suspect there may be some good geometry rules regarding stability. Any help, including photo or drawing is appreciated.

On pages 525 and 526 of The Handyman's Book, Essential Woodworking Tools and Techniques, by Paul N. Hasluck, Ten Speed Press, ISBN 1 - 58008 - 226 - 2, or an older edition, ISBN 0 - 89815 - 203 - 8. The book is a 1903 reprint, in it there are some illustrations of what are, called chair steps. It isn't a plan but it does have some basic dimensions and description of construction that should give you a starting point to make your own.
