greetings – my first post…. Have a client I’ve worked with before aproach me with a small…very small project. An old set of wood salad thongs made from monkey pod. The finish has come off from (ill-advise) dishwasher use and she wants to have them refinished. Matching bowl looks like a deep cherry color. What can be used as a “food safe” finish for this??? Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.
THanks, jb

Behlen Salad Bowl Finish might work. http://www.garrettwade.com/jump.jsp?itemType=PRODUCT&iProductID=102214 Rockler's carries a similar product. http://www.rockler.com/findit.cfm?page=5344&sid=AF644
Bono, you can also use tung oil mineral oil or walnut oil, but make sure they are pure- -100% pure-. Dont get "tung oil finish" at Home Depot because it has additives. I like the tung best...JohnD
In addition to the products listed by others there is an exemplary product in Livos, a food safe oil made in Europe. Boos Butcher block sells it as "Mystery Oil".
All interior finishes have been required to be non-toxic when cured since the mid 1970's. So, you can use any finish you want.
That said, nothing will stand up to a dishwasher.
Also, if the tools have been used without a finish they have undoubtedly become soaked with salad dressing. Cleaning them completely will not be possible. So, you will have to avoid any type of film finish as they will not adhere well to the items.
I would recommend just using a mineral oil and paraffin treatment like that used on cutting boards and butcher blocks. This is completely safe and while it will need to be renewed periodically, it will last some time if you keep the tools out of a dishwasher. Wood should never be soaked in dishwater or put into a dishwasher.
food safe finish
Olive Oil?
>>food safe finish Olive Oil?No, olive oil will go rancid over time.Howie.........
Working in the food service industry, I second the no olive oil. I would go with the salad bowl finish or Boos Mystery Oil. If I am doing a catering where wood handled items are part of the presentation, I will rub olive oil on the handles to bring back the depth of the wood, but it is never in a food contact area.
I agree I WAS STUPID again!
Mineral oil. It won't go rancid. You can find it at your supermarket in the isle with aspirin, etc or at any pharmacy. It'll also help cure constipation.
