I have a client interested in a bowl that I have made–the finish on it consists of Danish oil, followed by shellac and finished w/ wax. She was wondering if it would be useable as a salad bowl, and I am unsure of this…
Bowls that I have done in the past for food applications have been finished w/ “salad bowl finish” and If I have to, I will refinish this one, but I would rather not.
Will the shellac hold up to a salad bowl, or not?
any input would be appreciated.
Here’s a pic of the bowl in question

Peter,
Nice bowl! Too bad she wants to put food in it, as the existing finish is unlikely to hold up, especially to acidic foods. Ingesting cured shellac won't hurt you - it's on lots of things we ingest - but I wouldn't recommend for the inside of a bowl in which wet foodstuffs would be stored or served.
If you have to refinish, you shouldn't have to change the exterior.
I sure hope she doesn't put it in the dishwasher!

Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right.
Not a question of food safe--it just won't hold up.
Tell her to keep it for dry things--fruit, rolls, etc.
