Howdy, nice forum you all have here.
Anyone have any expirience with Formia jointers? 16″?
Will be receiving one, sight unseen. Needs a motor. I’m inclined to put a single phase on it . 5.5 hp. But may go with inverter and 7.5 hp.
A lot of 16″ jointers are 5.5 hp. Is the 7.5 hp a must have?
Anyone have a Formia and able to post a pic of? I don’t think the person offering it has the capabilities of digi photography.
They seem to out of business, Formia. Any one know of any info on them?
I also tried the Cabinetmakeronline forum but they seem like they are having server issues……
Thank-you,
lostdawg

hey dawg,
check out old woodworking machinery.com (owwm.com) - they have tons of info on vintage iron and you might even get lucky and find an owners manual.

I've been repairing and rebuilding machines for many years and never heard of that make. Lots of folks confuse the names of starters for brand names, not that I've heard of motor controls with that name but something sounds mixed up. Sure it's not Formula?
5.5 hp sounds more like a foreign rating. In the states it goes 5 hp, 7.5 hp. hp is plenty for a 16" jointer.
Any idea how old it is? Parallelogram tables, dovetailed ways or four cornrer inclines like on old Crescent, Oliver Jointers? Round head, clamshell or square head? Babbitt or Ball bearing? Sounds like it might be a European jointer perhaps.
http://www.cabinetmakeronline.com and http://www.woodweb.com are the few pro forums out there. All the rest are pretty much hobby oriented and there's at least a couple of dozen hobby forums.
Hello Rick. It's a euro style jointer. Maybe from Italy. Formia. Maybe an 80's make. I had heard of the name before but can't remember where.
I was at a friend's yesturday and his american Iron had a 3hp on it. I have used it before worked good. no lack of power. His has other issues. Wrong pulley sizing, slower cutter head speed. He needs to step it up a bit I think.
Thanks for the links. Cabinetmakeronline was the first place I thought of. No responses there though....

It's probably an SCM Formula jointer.
The city of Formia, Italy is known for other types of machinery.
