Frame and Panel combined with Plywood.
Short version:
I would like to combine some plywood with some frame and panel (frame is Maple). I have two options: (1) Attach frame and panel facade to plywood sheet (i.e. the F&P plays no structural role) and (2) use frame and panel as structural role, attached to plywood parts.
Clearly, the frame will move some. The length of wood in question is 20″. The plywood will move much less, if at all. This makes it “cross grain” construction of a sort. Will this present a problem? In case (1), can I firmly glue the Frame facade to the ply? (this seems to be done in some kitchen construction). In case (2) can you get away with “this much” cross grain usage? It isn’t as bad as the usual cross grain, as it is only one piece moving, and generally moving along the direction where it has less movement.
Thanks!

Unless the frame pieces are exceptionally wide (more than about 3", say), I think you can fasten them directly to a plywood panel without difficulty. If in doubt, just fasten them at their inside edges, and let the outside edges float.

I did my entry way with frame and panel oak ply with inset molding two years ago, and so far, no problems with movement. The rails and stiles are four inches wide. My wife liked the look so well that she now has me doing her bathroom wainscot in cherry frame and panel.
