Hi,
I’m about to begin gluing up all 25 frame & panel doors for our kitchen. I’ve already applied a first coat of oil-urethane finish to the panel, but I’m worried that glue squeezeout during clamping of the frames will bind the panel in place, preventing it from “floating.” What’s my best bet for preventing this?
Thanks!

Hi Mark,
Well with another coat or two of finish you should have no worries about gluing your panels in place. But as a hedge I sometimes move the panels around just a little once I have the clamps in place. This works only if your fit allows.
I use mostly a rabbeted raised panel so I can lever the panel over with a scraper blade. This will center my panel if needed and also break any glue bonding which, although unlikely, might occur. But again with a good finish on there, the glue bond won't be very enough to withstand wood movement. Remember that they used to break out rocks by filling cracks with wood wedges and then pouring water on them to expand them. When wood wants to move, it will. Good luck. Gary
Many Thanks!!
