I am looking into buying a new dado blade as the one I have now is getting ragged out. Starting to get lots of chip-out of fancy woods. I am looking at the new Freud dial-a-width and wanted to know if anyone has any experience with it. I will also be looking at the Forrest dado for just about the same money. What are you using and how does it stack up?

The Freud Dial A Width is excellent. It's identical to their SD508 with the addition of the adjustable hub. If you normally find it necessary to add shims for tight dados, the adjustable is a big time saver. In some magazine tests I have seen, it cut as well as the Forrest. I have been using it for about 7-8 years now.
However, it will not cut full width dados on many contractor saws. The arbor on those saws is too short to accomadate the extra width the adjustable hub adds.
Howie, thats interesting about the width problem. I've sold a couple of the new adjustables but they were to people who just walked in at bought them. No sales pitch was needed so the question of arbor length never came up. They havent come back so apparently it was not a problem for them. I'd better check them on Monday and call Freud to see whats up with this arbor length situation.
Thanks for the info...Sincerely;
The Tool Guy
Howie,
I use an old Sears contractor TS and you are correct when you mention the problem of the short 5/8 inch arbor. I use the Forrest dado set and it is not possible to use the full 1 inch width (all the chipper blades) on this saw. However, to date I have never needed to do so - yet!
If I had known before hand about this problem it may have deterred me from buying a dado set in the first place. Live and learn
As to Freud vs. Forrest I only use Forrest so cannot comment on the Freud dialer. I am completely happy with the performance of their Woodworker TS blades and the same goes for their dado set.
Regards,
Phillip
Can yours be resharpened? If it's worked well in the past, resharpening might be the way to go...............unless you're set on getting a new one. - lol
Dave, mine are a older set of cheap ones...18 tooth. They never did do that great of a job and when you work with them...get lots of chip out. So thought I would check into a new set.
