Has anybody used the freud insert knive rail and stile cutters for shapers?? If so how do you like them? It seems like a pretty good system, a new set of inserts would only run about 70 or 80 dollars after initial investment for cutter heads. thanks James l miller

Jameslmillar,
I used to buy high end shaper cutters but lately have standardised on Grizzley stuff.. other cutters would cost me well over a hundred dollars so I tried to be creative and buy cutters that I could multi task..
Eventually every cutter no matter who sells it will get dull. Getting them sharpened was expensvie enough that after three sharpenings I paid the price of a new cutter..
Finally I bought the cheap Grizzley cutters. They were only slightly more than getting the expensive cutters resharpened once so I figured what the heck, and bought a few.. well they've lasted just as long as the higher end cutters did so far and still aren't totally dull.
In the end I found I would rather have a whole bunch of cutters so one could be at the sharpeners, one could be in the shaper and one could be waiting to be replaced. I paid the same price but with Grizzley cutters I always had a sharp one whereas with whiteside, freud, etc. I could only afford one.
Street price for extra knives is more like $30(US) for a pair and they can be sharpened several times.

Charles, will cutters be available for next 5 to years or so??? And how long has this system been around? James
James,They have been in production for at least 12 years and have been very successful. There are no plans to discontinue them.

Charles is there any reason cutters wouldn't work with a bearing or rub collar either above or below for arch doors, and does freud make a bearing to match diameter of cutterhead?? James
James,The rub collar for use with the RS1000/RS2000 is the RSC-3 (85mm OD)

James - I have had this system for going on 10 years and it works fine. It is a well designed fully functional system. I can't say that it cuts any better or worse than any other cutter I have but, I like the variety of profiles available.
Steve
Thanks for the reply steve, i'm pretty anal about cutter sharpness and send them in every 2 or 3 sets therfore I lose the fit pretty fast. I like the idea of replacement cutters instead of buying a whole new set every so often. I'll probably order a set. Thanks again James
