Has anyone a recipe for a good friction polish that they’d be willing to share?

1. Shelac 2 lb cut. A tiny bit of mineral oil on the pad helps. See below for method.
2. Tung oil/ varnish, 50/50. Use a pad with just a "spot" of the mixture applied, just barely enough mixture so that you have to "force" the finish out onto the spinning piece. Very forgiving - more so than shelac. Results in a very, very thin film at very high gloss. The dry pad out beyond the wet spot polishes as it applies.

Thanks, Rich -- I will try the tung oil/varnish as soon as I have repaired the lathe (another story) and report back with my comments.
Good luck with the lathe.
Forgot to mention, sand to 320, if not 400. The wood should have a "base" finish coat first. Almost anything will do. Tung oil/varnish is good. Apply as usual, wipe dry. Let harden. Very lightly abrade with 4-0 steel wool. Do again, but when hard, rub with white nylon pad, not steel wool. THEN use polish.

Rich,
The lathe is mended and I tried your recipe.I was more than satisfied with the finish but I was hoping for something a bit more immediate.
I'm using Shellawax at the moment (these are only small pieces) and although I like the ease of application and finished gloss I wanted something a bit more fingerprintproof.
Thank you for your help.
