Dear All,
A friend of mine is looking to to have a door built for installation in CT. The door slab is to be 7′ x 3′ with overall dimensions available upon request. The job is for a door “unit” : frame, side lights, transom and surrounds as well as an interior trim package. See attached. Anyone interested in providing a price?
Best,
John

Why don't you post that over at Breaktime. Might get a wider audience of people that do that kind of work regularly.
Dear Bd,
I will, but this is the forum that I am on regularly and has the folks who have helped me so often, so before I go and offer work to strangers, I start within the "family".Best,John
Is he trying to get this less expensively than he could get by ordering through Rings End, or is there something else that calls for a full custom door assembly?
Dear Steve,
Good question. The prices he has been getting are from Interstate and some operation out of FL. Neither of which fit his budget. He asked me if I was interested, but it is beyond my skill level, so I suggested that we put on "Knots" in case anyone is interested.Best,John
That's gonna be spendy no matter who builds it. I finished installing this one after Thanksgiving. The delivered cost for the door and transom (custom made) was ~$18k.
Oops - forgot the picture
Dear Dave,
WOW! That's pretty! Nice job! I'll pass that along.Best,John
I didn't build it - I just installed it and did the trimout.
Dear Dave,How tall is that door?John
Dear John - The door is 8-0 x 3-0 and the overall width of the unit is 7'
We do this type of work all the time, as custom work. We do not compete well against all the 'budget' vendors out there, one of which mentions casually that he sells 40 container loads of these a month, east of the Mississippi. However, we make a superior unit that far exceeds what the marketplace has stooped to providing as a matter of course.
We work for those than recognize there is a difference between pattern grade Honduras Mahogany and Khaya, Chinese Mahogany, Utile or others. Fully haunched cope and stick, mortise and tenon joinery, with insulated glass and excellent seals and clarity, properly sealed in place. Warranted for 5 years. Pre-finished if you wish, to the color you wish. All hardware prep to your specifications. We have trained career craftsmen that earn a living wage taking responsibility for each and every project, from start to finish, including the crate.
It is what we call Fine Woodworking, the antithesis to the "they don't do it like that anymore" syndrome.
Contact me thru the website if you are interested.
