I am working on a fretwork project and I would like to stain it a darker colour but because of the hundreds of through cuts, it would be nearly impossible to do. I have looked at spray stain but still would not be able to wipe off excess stain from the cuts. My question is, is it possible to fume Mahogany to darken the wood? Anyone have experience doing this?
Thanks in advance for your replies.

If there are tannins in the wood, it will darken it. If not, it won't make a big difference. I'm not sure if mahogany has tannins or not. I'm not sure if you're dealing with a true mahogany or a mahogany substitute. I DO know that the sunlight will darken it if you leave it outside.
I think someone else will chime in on this one.

White oak is high in tannic acid. Mahogany has some. Wet wood darkens quicker and you can add tannic acid to anywood to react with the Ammonia. Again wet wood works faster. We do timbers of oak, fir and whatever this way.
