Depends how tamper-proof you expect it to be. Heck, even a brand can be planed, sanded, or chiseled off and refinished.
The simplest method I've seen described is to write your mark with a pencil and just shellac over it. :)
There has been a couple of discussions on this over the last year at least. Try a search on branding iron and/or signing.
have labels made up, put on and shellac over it
have metal plates engraved and put on
write your name with pencil or sharpie and shellac/finish over it
use a branding iron
use a wood burning pen
Each method has its advocates - figure out which works for you and go for it.
1 - measure the board twice, 2 - cut it once, 3 - measure the space where it is supposed to go 4 - get a new board and go back to step 1
