I am refinishing a maple trestle table and am having a problem with the top. I stripped off the old finish and stain. I re-stained the table red mahogany and sealed with Minwax polyurathane. I started to get raised bubbles on the table top (only on one end). I scraped them off and applied another coat of the polyurathane and still had the bubbles rise but not as many. I was wondering if furniture polish with silicone caused this even though the table was stripped of old finish. Any suggestions of what to do or avoid in the future?

Yes, silicone contamination can still remain after stripping. In fact, it generally does. After stripping further cleaning is generally in order. I use acetone and lots of clean rags and/or paper towels. I will generally, use a coat of dewaxed shellac as a barrier coat. Then, I will apply the first coat of my clean coats letting it dry for 2-3 days. This coat is finely sanded with 320 paper mounting on a sanding block. Then I will apply my final coats.
If you plan to use either a waterborne finish of any type or an oil based poly varnish finish, be sure your barrier coat is a dewaxed shellac.
Thank you for your suggestions. I will try them.
