Can someone help me locate a 1/2″ bright brass furniture nail with a 1/4 – 9/32″ head? Until recently Hillman had one that I could buy in my local hardware store. I have checked the usual fastener sites and have googled until my eyes are about to pop out. All tacky suggestions would be appreciated. (I may regret that last sentence….)

You need to look under Upholstery Supplies. Mails like that are sold in some hardware stores but if it's bordering the covering, it's an upholstery item. A lot of times, the nails come in a long strip and you just line them up and start nailing away.
You are talking about the bright brass domed nails, right? Use a plastic hammer to drive them in - a metal hammer will dent/scratch them.
If you are talking about "decorative nails," you can find a limited selection in small packs at fabric stores such as JoAnn's and Hancock. If you need something really specific, try the upholstery supply houses such as http://www.sunshinefoam.com/
I'm not the one who needs them and I have an account at an upholstery supply co already. Actually, my dad opened his account in the late '40s and when I started needing things like that, I opened mine.
"I cut this piece four times and it's still too short."
