FWW Subscription and Lie-Nielsen Scraper Deal Great Way To Go
Staff of FWW and readership,
OK, you got me. I’ve been a bandito for too long. Slinking around, looking in here and reading/posting in the chat room with out subscribing, only buying a magazine off the news stand if there is an article that interested me ( and I must say I passed up more than a few issues ). Blame it on the economy.
But . . .
I re-subscribed again today. Yaaaaay !
“Who cares” some of you may say. I understand you saying that so on your way now to enjoy the rest of FWW or what ever else sharpens your smoother.
To those on the fence, like I was, waiting for “oh I don’t know what”, I would like to encourage you to subscribe or re-subscribe. There have been significant improvements, or at least a return to the things I find of interest and the things I buy this magazine for.
In addition; last night I needed to use a scraper and was dreading it because the ones I had been using lately were my poorly made ones and they were too dull to use for the purpose which was removing dust nibs from a new finish on a table.
I was dreading sharpening the bloody things. Sharpening scrapers is tricky enough, for me, with out having to deal with a scraper that is not flat and is poorly finished.
I opened my box of scrapers and lookiey there . . . I had forgotten I had these Lie-Nielsen scrapers. I don’t scrape much, up ’till now and the LNs were the last I purchased when learning how to use them.
Recent work with the old junky ones was just scraping off straggle strings from my planes when I would stop a hand plane cut in the middle of the table rather than go all the way off the end. Good enough was good enough.
Annnnnyhoooo . . . I pulled out the Lie-Nielsen scrapers, they were freshly sharp from when I put them away and they were GRAND ! JUST GRAND ! A pleasure to use ! Flat, sharp, nice finish. Did just what I needed to do on the spot.
When I saw the email to re-subscribe and get a Lie-Nielsen scraper for free and the fact that the mag has gone the way I hoped/requested it would ( and the fact that the economy is brightening ) . . .
I signed on for another go ’round.
FWW has given me what I want and enjoy.
Thank you !
PS: FWW staff please do anything you can to improve the functionality of this site with the iPad as far as watching video and getting PDFs. I understand it is not all in your court and that there are issues outside your control. Maybe even offer an APP for FWW on the iPad APPs store. There may be ways to convert from flash to what ever, etc., etc., etc. I am not a computer whiz just a consumer.
I can watch youtube and other videos on my iPad so I know you can do it.
Keep up the good work !

Good for you!
I love scrapers they have gotten me out of trouble more times than I can count. As to subscribing, I subscribe to the online version, also a good deal IMO. Besides, now that we have put our money where our mouth is, we have a right to bitch..LOL...
thanks
Yeah, glad to hear we did one thing right. I know... I wish they handed out a few of those card scrapers here at FW too...
As a novice woodworker, I rather feel that card scrapers are the ultimate torture device. I mean really? Who would think of putting a burr on a piece of flat steel to do surface prep???
Glad to hear that the new LN one helped speed along the sharpening process.
And as to the iPad... hopefully soon but don't hold us to any exact dates.
I've got one of my own and have really been enjoying the NYTimes app. In fact, I like it so much I don't have the energy to go out into the cold to get the physical paper in the morning any more!
So I understand the desire for better FW offerings on the iPad (and on other eReader like devices). Hopefully we can find a good solution soon.
Take care, Gina
Wow that was quick
Gina,
I was off figuring out how to email the "PS: iPad" request to FWW. (thinking maybe it would be missed if just posted here ) I wound up sending it to Taunton. Hope that doesn't get us in trouble. Just kidding.
Your response shows that Knots isn't "dead" or that the staff doesn't listen.
Two thumbs up.
jg2508,
Yah . . . i'm learning . . . slowly but . . . i'm learning.
How dumb am I??
Last week I mailed a check for a 3-year renewal, with no offer of anything other than magazines. Maybe I should hold out until the last minute next time, apparently the offers get better after you let your subscription lapse...
Still, I manage to find something to learn or enjoy in every issue, even if it's just the pictures of everyone else's work.
Don't have an Ipad (yet), maybe the FWW app would push me over that edge also.
You are smart cause you support a fine Mag and fine craft
iPad is good where you want a tablet like object flat on the table (not sticking up). For instance I have the iPad on the counter in the kitchen and can see my iTunes play list that is on the big computer hooked to my home stereo. Using the Remote app I can pick songs, change volumne, start and stop from way across the room or in the other room.
Is closed , for the most part, to dirt and stuff getting in it because the keyboard is just a sheet of glass unlike a laptop. I hate to take my laptop to my shop because so much junk can fall into the keyboard.
Can take notes and look stuff up on the iPad while working on a major project on the big screen computer.
On the other hand when I eat lunch at work I can prop it up and have the space in front of it clear to put my lunch and can read books etc., while I eat. You can tell my books from others because mine all have stains from food in them 'cause I read during my lunch period at work. Now I touch the screen with catsup on my fingers and can just wipe it off later. Also the bloody books close up and fall over but the iPad stays "open" and on the right page. Can look up a word in the dictionary by just touching it and can highlight and add a note almost as easy.
IPad is good when you need to stand around and use it or have it where there isn't a good place to set it down to type etc.
Don't tell anyone but the iPad is the perfect computer to take to the jon to read these posts, read news papers etc.
A lap top is tippy and vulnerable to damage if it falls off the side of the tub.
iPad lays flat, solid state hard drive so can drop it while it is "running" and no big deal.
. . . but I've said too much.
Now you've done it...
From now on, I'm holding out on renewal until they send me an Ipad, or at least a Lie-Nielsen No 4 (Bronze).
OK . . .
md_mc,
Yah. Good good luck with that.
Until then Merry Christmas and have a great New Year !
+1 for iPad friendliness
I'm going through the exact same thing: just re-subscribed after several years of lurking (just found the scraper in the mail today - great!), but sad to find out that I can't view any videos on my iPad. I was hoping to be able to watch some videos and tips while in my shop (where I don't have a PC), but alas that doesn't work (yet...?)
But great to read that the Fine Woodworking/Taunton folks are on it...
have a nice new year's eve!
