Anyone out there know where I can buy some Gabon Ebony? The really black stuff.
I am using as a highlight in a table and need thin (veneer thin or I can cut it down to size) X 3/8″ wide and 48″ long max. Don’t need a lot if it.
I’ve googled it and haven’t found anything except 1 X 3 lumber with a rather stiff price.
What do you think about an alternative of dying some maple or other wood to black and get the same effect?

Try giving "Plywood and Lumber sales" in Oakland CA a call they purchased a large lot of ebony from a hardwood dealer that closed and they might be able to help. Also check out globalwoodsource.com in San Jose CA they might have it also. Last but not lease is Macbeth hardwoods in Berkeley CA. Sorry don't have a web address for this one.
Good luck

Troy,
Thanks for the leads. I'll check all of them.

I've picked up a couple of pieces on eBay. Sometimes you can get lucky and find a deal or two although most of it gets bid over what you could buy from hardwood suppliers for.
If you build it he will come.
I just got some here that was black as night

Try to talk to Bill. I'm not 100% sure he will ship, but it's worth a try.
I just bought 2 8/4 pieces of gabon ebony on e-bay. With shipping it cost $65.00/Bd Ft.
Best price I could find.
Most ebony is sold by the pound for about $15-20 or between $80-125/Bd Ft.
48" is long for ebony. You may have to pay a premium for the length.
As said before, look at e-bay and type in "gabon and gaboon ebony".

You should be able to find some closer than LR Ar. but the last time I was out at Hogan Hardwoods, they had a good supply of some of the best that I have seen. They do have a website. http://www.hoganhardwoods.com/
