What gel stain is recommended for finishing cherry? Minwax seems to be more readily available in my area but I have seen good notes on Bartley and General Finishes.
Thanks,
Brian

Do you really want to obscure the subtle grain of cherry with a gel stain? Cherry will darken naturally in quite a short period of time, so if you get it right to begin with in a year or two it will be too dark.
I am always a bit skeptical of Minwax products, but I can't actually say I've compared the brands you mentioned. And definately not on cherry.
Evening Brian. I have used both and prefer the Bartley's. Tried it several years ago and unless something better gets my attention, will stick with it.
But..... Steve has a point about the cherry. Stop and thing about it. Which stain would you use on it? Perhaps a nice coat of cherry stain to make it look like cherry? I think you get the point. :>)

BM,
I have used bartleys and general on maple and cherry, I prefer the general because the colors seem to be a little darker or richer. Both do a great job of staining very even, and preventing blotchiness. By the way, if you want to stain cherry, go for it. Some pieces I have built were stained, some left natural. Both look good. The cherry will darken a little over time, more if the piece is in direct sunlight - so plan for that accordingly. Good luck.
