I’m getting ready to finish a couple of cherry night stands and I saw that Bartleys has a gel varnish. Has anyone ever used this? Is there anything I should know?

Hi Arden,
Haven't used the Bartley's product, but Rockler has a urethane gel that I've used for test pieces, though I haven't used it for a completed project - yet. Available only in a satin finish. The label says it was developed in conjunction with Michael Dresdner.
It's the consistency of Vaseline (not quite as stiff), so it won't drip, run, or pool, especially on vertical surfaces. Very forgiving, especially for beginning woodworkers. Must take caution when disposing of rags (spontaneous combustion hazard).
I've ragged it on and off; leaves a thin, smooth, layer with no need to sand between coats or rub out the final coat. Does take awhile to dry, so dust nibs must be taken into consideration. Need to apply 6 - 8 coats to protect like 2 - 3 coats of brushed or sprayed product.
Pops the grain far better than water-borne products. Applied it successfully as a barrier coat - to modulate the coverage of gel stains on blotch-prone woods.
Good luck,

Hi Arden,
I have used gallons of the Bartley Gel Varnish, all the cherry trim in my old house was finished with the stuff and some of the pieces of furniture that I have built.
Actually, most of what Jazzdog said applies, satin finish, the finish is fairly 'tight', but builds nicely after 3 or four coats, stuff is the consistancy of Vaseline. Best way to apply is with a brush (nothing too fancy) in a fairly small area, I used the Scotts White rags in a box (at your local big box store) to remove the product (you will use many rags to remove), latex or the blue gloves are a must have. The products flashes fairly quickly in warm weather and becomes next to impossible to remove, without reapplying more product to loosen it back up.
I have been fairly pleased with the finish that can be achieved with the product.
Best of luck.
Arden,
For what it's worth, I suggest that you take a peek at the current issue of FW (August, 2005). It contains an article on choosing the Best Wipe On Finish. The article is probably not as extensive as a book on the subject, but it does provide a good deal of uselful information. Hope this helps.
What will a gel varnish add to your finish that a plain wipe on wouldn't?
