i've used a general drill press a few times and they are very good machines. the General (made in canada) has 4 spindle bearings instead of 2, and has heavier castings than taiwanese presses. from what i have noticed the machining is excellent, but it is a lot more expensive than the competition. i have never had any problems with any of the general machinery that i have used and own, and would recomend any of their products. i can't speak from experience on any general international machinery, but from what i've seen at tool shows i would assume they are on par with delta's taiwanese stuff.
I have 5 pieces of Canadian made General machinery and find them all to be of very high quality. All parts have a beautiful fit and finish and run very smoothly. The drill press has a 1hp Leeson motor and a 6 step pulley that can get you speeds up to 4910 rpm. Yes they are expensive. $1000 Canadian here but you'll only need to buy one in your lifetime. I have a friend that owns some of the General Int. machinery. From what I can see they are the same twainese machinery you see elsewhere just painted green.
