I bought a coffee table. It’s Bernhardt french country white, but it’s too gray and a muddy gray. I want to repaint white or black but I also want the multi tonal affect it currently has. It is white oak veneer.
Any direction from more experienced refinishers would be appreciated.

Maybe you should have gone with a more northern selection. Maybe Norwegian Country white. Or Mongolian Sunset. What you have is most likely a who knows what proprietary no humans involved factory finish. What is compatible with that is anyones guess. Attempting to remove the existing finish will be difficult to impossible to do and might result in turning that piece of furniture into kindling --- But if I was presented with that problem I would rough the existing finish with sandpaper and use a thinned coat of pigmented white shellac. I would experiment with adding pigment ( go to the paint store-- a real one ,not Ace ) until I got the tone I was looking for. Maybe more than one coat.. very fine sanding between coats...Shellac bonds with almost anything and almost anything bonds with shellac. After that in all likelihood I , if i were me, for that piece of furniture, would use lacquer over the shellac- either sprayed or brushed but some kind of poly would also work or an oil or paint or ,or or. Finishing is subjective.
Thank you. If I wreck it, I wreck it. I'll paint it black and accept the outcome. Oh and I use Benjamin Moore always. Usually aura spa or regal .
