I’ve recently inherited an old General lathe. The locking handle on the tool rest is broken off and there are a few other things that could use some help. Problem is, I don’t know where to start looking for parts. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Well, good news and bad news...
Good news is they are still in business and they have a website. It is http://www.general.ca
Bad news is that the site is under construction right now, but should be up before too long.

Thanks, I'll keep trying.
what other parts are you missing? if it's just small things like a handle you could either call general or go to someplace like leevalley and get a new handle. if it's more critical parts you'd be better off looking for another lathe.
I'm missing the cabinet door. But that's not as strategic as the toolrest handle. The problem with getting a replacement is that this was apparently cast as one piece with the rod that runs through the base. So there is are no threads or such to remove and replace the handle alone. My present handle is a pair of pliers that tightens the stump left after the handle broke off.

From your description, I'm imagining a rod that threads into a nut at the bottom of the tool rest base. There are any number of sources for handles of with tapped holes in them. Reid Tool (http://www.reidtool.com/) and MSC (http://www.mscdirect.com) are two that I know of. A handle of the right configuration and some threaded rod should put you back in business.
you could easily drill out the stump and then tap the hole and screw a replacement handle in. hope this helps.
Wilke Machinery Co, York, PA, http://www.wilkemach.com, sells General. If everything else fails, you probably could get them to order for you.
