Matt,
In Episode 3 of Getting Started in Woodworking (Make a Cutting Board) Asa mentions that he milled the wide maple board from rough stock on a jointer and planer. I did not see a jointer in the machines in the video that looked wide enough to face-joint that board. Did he use a 12-inch or so jointer, or did he face-joint it some other way?
Thanks,
Lanier

We did use our 12-in. jointer to surface that maple board. It's located in another part of the shop, which is why you don't see it in the video.
If you don't have a jointer wide enough you can do a few things:
1. Edge glue two fully-dressed boards to make the full width. Bookmatched boards would actually be nice for this project.
2. Surface one side by hand and then run the opposing surface through the planer
3. Use this neat planer jig to joint a wide board with your benchtop planer.
