I am gettting ready to seal coat some dyed pieces. I have a can of blonde Shellac. I am hoping I can pour that through a doubled up paint filter to strain off any, or most wax. I am then going to cut this about in half with Denat. alcohol. Any other approaches I should try? Thanks

The filter will remove some, but not a lot. Let the shellac sit in solution for a week or so and you should see the wax settle to the bottom. Carefully pour or siphon the clean shellac off the top and leave the waxy stuff on the bottom...or buy dewaxed shellac next time.

Can do, Tom. Thanks. I had seen the settling before, but didn't put it together until I had some bad orange peeling to deal with. Despite best intentions, I never managed to by in the flake form. Thanks for the tip!
Two things:
Buying shellac in flake form will not get you dewaxed shellac. The wax is a natural component of shellac. Unless the flakes are sold and labled "dewaxed", they ain't.
Second, Zinsser is no marketing premixed 100% dewaxed blond shellac under the name "Seal Coat". It's a very nice product.
Hey, Howie, thanks for clearing that up! And I will definitely keep that Zin. product in mind.
I get mine at a local paint store that carries Zinsser products.
I think fot the best results you should be using dewaxed shellac. You can buy it from Jeff jewitt at http://www.homesteadfinishing.com. Also He sells the sealer and other items. Plus he can tell you exactly how to use and troubleshoot your problem which is a plus to me.
At Darkworks cut to size made to burn......Putty isnt a option
I do Ron, did you mean this for me?

Where can you buy the Seal Coat? Last time I checked HD, Lowe's, or Walmart, no one had it.
However, I have enough dewaxed flakes to last me quite a while.
I use it to seal the exotic waxy woods prior to lacquer coating.

my local big boxes carry zinisar(sp?) shellacs. Might be a local thing though.
Bill, my local 'big boxes' carry zinnser, but not the Seal Coat.

I saw some at Rockler today. Does it come in the amber? I need it to match an old piece. The usual amber matched it pretty well.
Blond only....
Keep in mind though, dewaxed shellac is only needed if you plan to top coat with a varnish containing polyurethane. Standard shellac is fine under other finishes including standard varnish.
Hey, that's a relief, because I'm not using poly. Thanks.
