Hi Folks,
Can any of you tell me about the charastics of Ailanthus altissima (aka Tree of Heaven aka Ghetto Palm)

once the wood has been cured ? It certainly is dense and hard when green.

They grow like weeds. In fact, weeds could take lessons from them. They are a plague on my property & neighborhood. I don't see how wood that grows so fast can have much strength or hardness. Woods of the World CD has no entry for it. I consider myself a treehugger, but I can't bring myself to do it for this one. There is data on the 'Net about them.

How do you feel about WOW? I bought the first two versions with disappointing usage (mostly the software disappointed as well as some holes in the lists) then had high expectations for the recent release. I returned it for a refund.
I have an older release, I guess -- version 2.5. Like you, I was not impressed. The data doesn't match the actual woods by common name. I also had several varieties as lumber or veneer which I could not find. If I had all the data, I believe that I could present it in a more compact form -- too many headings, too many long sentences.Cadiddlehopper
I have turned some on the lathe, but I don't recall it being hard.
wood,
I had occasion a while back to see a pretty good sized log sawn. After the log had been squared up into a cant about 12" x12" x 12', the sawyer took a 4/4 board off the best face. As it was cut, the board , bowed and rose off the cant. By the time the saw was to the end of the 12' cant, the sawkerf had opened up to about 18". They turned the cant 90* and sawed the rest without any trouble, but I'd guess (!!) that there might be some stress in those boards. Ailanthus grows so fast that I'd expect it to be full of stresses, but not hard or dense.
Regards,
Ray Pine
