I am looking to build a cabinet with glass sides. On these sides, I want to include some etchings. I can’t find a stock stencil of what I want. Does anyone know what type of material etching stencils are made of. I am probably going to use an etching cream. Also, I can’t seem to find, on the web anyway, how to adhere the stencil to the glass so that the cream does not get under the stencil. I am going to be stopping in at my local stained glass shop, but time is hard to find. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I've used contact paper as an etching stencil. You can buy it anyplace shelf paper is sold. While it is called paper, it is actually sheet vinyl with a peal-and-stick adhesive. You can stick it on the glass, draw your pattern on the front, cut through it with an exacto knife, and there you are: an acid-resistant stencil stuck to the glass ready for etching paste.

I use Gerbermask for etching although I don't use acids. This material is commonly used by the sign industry for removable stencils. It can be cut with a plotter/cutter via computer. Any sign shop in your town will have this or will know of a shop that does. Don't use sign vinyl as it will be difficult to remove. The Gerbermask peels right off. I believe it will be resistant to your etching cream. It is waterproof and will not come off until you peel it up. If your design can be drawn in the computer, use Illustrator as that is the common program used by the sign industry. That is, if you want it cut that way. You can also cut this stuff by hand with a sharp knife.
Not sure if this will help but I found this link.. Worth a look?

If you get pop-up I DID NOT DO IT!
Thanks everyone for the information. I now have enough sources that if this commission comes through, I can get the etching done. The hardest part is going to be getting my design onto the resist. I like the contact paper idea from Jamie. It will allow me to trace the design before cutting.Again, thanks all for the help.Eric
Etching cream... Is this HF based? Be aware that HF (Hydrofluoric acid) is EXTREMELY nasty stuff.
