I have a table top approximately 50″ x 30″ into which I’d like to drop a glass center approximately 42 x 22″
How thick should that glass be and any particular type?
e.g tempered???
Thanks

I'd say 5/16" thick should be about right, but 3/8" would be playing it safe. Go for tempered glass if the "environment" warrants it - especially if there are kids around.

8 - 10mm but I'd use laminated rather than tempered. Its usually available with polished edges from any glass supplier with out needing to be tempered after cutting & polishing.

Thanks for for the heads-up on laminated - I'll check out my local supplier this morning.Trying to find a glass shop that knows what a millimeter is might be more difficult.Cheers.
Ok then, try 5/16 or 3/8" then take a look at this :-) http://www.unc.edu/~rowlett/units/usmetric.html It might be of interest to know the US was nearly the first nation to embrace a metric system back in Jefferson's day.

I vote for 3/8" and laminated. I saw a demo on glass once, tempered resists breaking more than regular, but when it does go it is as bad if not worse than regular due to the extra energy needed to shatter it - transmits that energy into the shards. Laminated is what they make windshields out of - it will shatter but the lamination hold it together or the bits together more and what does come off tends to be in small cubes rather than shards.
If you have kids - lamination is best
The absolute safest is tempered and laminated. Myself, I would go with Tempered, if it breaks, it breaks up into very small squarish chips, very unlikely to cut you. Car windows are tempered, windshields are tempered and laminated.Furniture...the Art of a FurnitureMaker
