Please help! I’ve had a disaster and must patch the cherry veneer on some plywood. What type of glue should I use ? I was thinking of contact cement. The good thing is it will bond instantly but the bad thing is it will bond instantly. Any thoughts?

IMO Liquid hide and a hypodermic seringe. The squeeze out will take stain/finish better.Other choices C.A or PVA may come to the surface and be difficult to get rid of.Happy holidays,

I have limited veneering experience (so take the advice of others if it conflicts with mine).
The last glue I would use is contact cement. It is great for Formica, but I can't imagine using it on veneer.
The glue I have used is ordinary yellow carpenter's glue - very thin coat over the whole area. Clamping is the challenge, but if the area is flat and accessible, I would put a layer of saran wrap (to keep any squeeze out from sticking) then another board, and apply clamps.
Another technique is to apply white or yellow glue to both veneer and plywood and let it dry. (One article on this technique suggested two coats of slightly thinned glue.) Heat will reactivate the carpenter's glue, so align the veneer and iron on with an ordinary clothes iron, much like the heat activated edge veneer for plywood. I have been told (but have not tried) that the white glue can be reactivated multiple times, but the yellow glue only once.
Hi Darren,
Ditto what Jacko said about hide glue and a syringe. The other advantage to hide glue is that it is reversible with heat and water if/when further repairs are needed. Other adhesives will almost certainly be more troublesome.
Be safe,
Ken
