I always seam to have glue left on my project even though I try my darnest to get it all by wiping it with water and sanding the rest of it off But there seams to always be some residue on my project do you have any secrets about having a glue residue -free project?

Your question tells me exactly what you are doing wrong! "I try my darnest to get it all by wiping it with water and sanding the rest of it off"
Whenever you use water and a rag to get rid of the glue what you are actually doing is thinning out the glue and forcing it into the pores of the wood. You might not see it now- but, as you have found out, you will see the "ghosting" as soon as you put finish on the piece. The best is to have no squeeze out (I am supposed to be doing a video in the next few weeks on how to do just that), but if you do get some- don't wipe it! Let it partially dry (till it has a rubber like consistency) and cut it off with a sharp chisel- Do not be tempted to scrape across the grain!
If I inadvertently get glue somewhere else on the project I circle it with a pencil and clean it up with a card scraper or chisel after it dries. If I know that squeeze out will not be a problem (like when gluing up a panel - it will go thru the planer again anyway) then I might use a rag- but that is the ONLY TIME!
Hope that helps
