For glue-sizing artist canvas, I've used the traditional dry mix. But it can be made from ready-mixed hide glue or even regular wood glue when thinned.
Unless you're really unbelieveably desperate, don't use Franklin liquid hide glue at all. Every time I've tried it, it has not dried properly. HIde glue from pearls is incomparably more reliable. A little more time involved, but worth it. Mix with about double the amount of water you'd normally use. I.e. add water to the cold dry glue until it won't absorb any more and there is a little water on top. Then double that and heat it up. 135 to 140 degrees. Maybe around 5:1 by weight. Depends on the kind you have. If you want it really clear you can use edible gelatine. (Knox) Basically a food-grade glue.
