I have recently completed a set of night tables with one drawer each. My client has some favorite rocks which she wants me to glue to the front of the drawer as decoration, not a handle. What is the best adhesive for this?

Epoxy, Two part, something like West Brand or System 3.
Or construction adhesive, as long the rock will hide the adhesive.
Many moons ago I used some exterior plywood siding that was covered with pebbles. At the joints we would apply a silicone adhesive and smush some pebbles into it. Silicone is less likely to hurt your finish than some other adhesives, it will conform to uneven surfaces and not drip. If the rock falls off you can just peel off the excess and do it again. Some of the epoxies like West Systems will cost a small fortune for just the few dabs you need, it may take your finish with it if the rocks get knocked off. A small tube of Goop or similar is only a few dollars.
Barrie,
I too would use epoxy. It will make a very good bond with most any rock other than the crumbly kind.
I think a good bond is a requirement with your project. No matter what your client says, if the rocks are big enough to get ahold of they certainly will be used for handles.

I have used a two part epoxy designed for use in concrete applications. Most hardware stores carry it. In my case I used it to secure the base of a table to a marble table top. Its a game table and gets a lot of side to side pressure. It has not failed in over three years of heavy use in a commercial establishment.

Your local granite installer will have "stone bondo" that can be tinted to any colour
and is strong like borsch. Used for granite joints, bonding steel rod to granite. etc.
Like bondo,easy to work with...
