I've had success using the spray on stuff by 3M- Super 77 is what I think it's called. You can pick it up in the big blue or orange box stores. I use this sometimes for the bottoms of humidors or jewelry boxes. I don't know how well it would work on a very large piece.

you know-- I have had mixed results with the spray on glue ( not on this material but in general) I think I will stay away from it thanks anywaymaking sawdust
Vern, cut the material oversize .Cut out cardboard (not corrigated) to fit bottom and a little wider each way.
Lay the leatherette on a flat surface with the finish side down. Slightly stretch and push pin material to the flat board.
Apply glue/ add cardboard /another flat board and clamp till dry. Later, cut exactly to size with a sharp utility knife and a straight edge. To fasten to box, just 'dot' the bottom with a few beads of glue.
and add the insert.

your proceedure is excellent -- I don't normally glue to cardboard except for the inside bottom--and since I rebet out and recess the bottom up in it ,I can cut the material to the exact shape of the bottom and glue it on after I screw the bottom up in the rabet--I leave the corners rounded and sand the bottom plywood corners to an exact fit--anyway my wife -who has a sewing business has some glue that seems to work real good-- and these are humidors so of course, there is spanish cedar on the inside --making sawdust
