I’m on my second day attempting to edge glue 1/4″ Bocote to be used as the bottom of a small box. My first attempt was with Titebond II…the joint failed even after on overnight in the clamps. This morning I did some research on the net….some suggestions were to slightly sand the edges to be joined and, to eliminate the oils, rub with solvent. The final suggestion was to use either poly glue or a 2-part epoxy. I chose the 2-part epoxy (System 3)….it came out of the clamps OK but failed shortly thereafter…..This wood is beautiful and the end project promises the same….trouble is, I can’t get the joints permanently joined….any suggestions????

Gluing
My gluing of oily, waxy woods has been most successfull by cleaning the surfaces very well with lacquer thinner. Mineral spirits were almost counter productive in my experience.
I'm really suprised tyou're having trouble gluing the bocote. About 6 years ago I built this table, using regular Titebond, and it's holding up just fine...I would give the light sanding a try. good luck
A beautiful table indeed...the bocote is a most elegant specie...I was a bit surprised also as the lid for the box included laminations of ebony and ash and it all went together and looks jusy fine.......for the edges I sanded well.....I thought that the 1/4" might be the issue but I've done that thin of a stock before without problems....It's sitting in the clamps yet again (glued with epoxy) ....I'll take alook this afternoon...Thanks for the reply
