HI,
I need to make a box using African Ebony veneers, 1.5mm thick. I am interested to hear what type of adhesives others have used for gluing Ebony and if the timber needed any special; treatment prior to gluing.

I have glued Macassar Ebony veneers (with no paper backing) using yellow glue with good results. No special treatment to it - just leave the clamps on for 24 hours. Need to make sure a good even spread of glue and lots of good even pressure is applied. If it has paper backing contact cement will work fine.
By yellow glue I asume you mean a PVA type adhesive such as Titebond.

Yes.
As an afterthought, I thought you may like to see what I did with it. It is not a big area, but enough to compare it to a box size.
Nice piece!
I have glued Gabon ebony to mesquite, African blackwood, and oak with West Systems epoxy. Freshly machined surfaces, but no special preparation other than that. No problems to date.
I think epoxy would prove a very expensive option. The box dimensions are approx 12" (300mm) x 9" (230mm) x 42(100mm) and all components will be veneered on both faces.
I have used Titebond on ebony with good success - no failures yet.
