Hi all,
I need to make a box using 1.5mm African Ebony veneers. My question is what adhesive to use. I am thinking of resin, urea formaldehide but am open to suggestions from others who have done veneering using fairly thick Ebony veneers.

Hey there,
I'm certainly no expert, so hopefully you'll get more posts back to you than this one, but maybe this will spur you into a little investigation. I just finished my first "Big" project, which was a couple of humidors, made of veneered ceder. I too was unsure what to use to glue my unbacked veneer to the substrate and hit upon what I think is a really cool and effective technique. You can find the particulars in FWW's technique book on veneering and marquetry, but in short: Use Type II PVA glue (Like Titebond II), paint it on both the substrate and the veneer fairly thin, wait for it to tack up a bit (you should probably mist the face side of the veneer with H2O so it doesn't curl at this point), then place the veneer on the substrate and, using a regular clothes iron set at medium/high begin pressing your veneer on from the center out. The heat works to cross-link the glues on the different pieces together so it's really like one layer that you've re-activated. I thought it worked great for a small project like a box, and though I've gotten a few queer looks from people I've mentioned it to it's worked very well and has a sound basis for the technique. Look into it to see if it's for you, and good luck!

I have used polyurethane glue very successfully on ebony, solid and veneer. However, if the veneer is very thin go easy on the ammount of glue, but that applies to all glues on veneer. I am in the UK and I specialise in boxes made entirely with veneer.
